The American people still help the horribly destitute Democratic and Republican parties pay for their national conventions. This year we forked over $36.6 million plus another $100 million just for security.
In 2008, the public paid for about 25% of the convention cost. So, clearly, the parties were able to scrape together enough dough to pick up the slack. They should be cut off completely for 2016 — including security costs. They can keep the Secret Service detail that the candidates get for any other travel, but the parties should also have to pay the host city to cover the costs of extra security. I don’t like how it feels having my tax dollars used to set up Speech Free Free Speech Zones.
A few congresscritters have stumbled upon this idea and introduced legislation limiting subsidies for the conventions. Unfortunately, (you guessed it), the bill is stalled in Congress.
